Adalaj Vav (1498) is an impressive, five-storey step well (30m deep) located 10km north of the city, off the road to Gandhinagar. The walls and pillars of this well are covered with intricate sculptures, and there is detailed latticework. It is best to come here just before noon when the sun lights up the well to the bottom.
There is a pleasant garden. Queen Rudabai constructed this place in 1499 as a summer retreat. Buses from the Central bus stand in Ahmedabad depart to here every fifteen minutes.
