Located 31km northeast of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar is the state capital of Gujarat. It is a planned city, designed after Independence by Le Corbusier. He also designed Chandigarh in Punjab. The city is divided into numbered sectors. It was named Gandhinagar after Mahatma Gandhi. Construction began in 1965 and government activities were established here in 1970.

The Akshardham Swami Narayana Complex in Sector 20, has an opulent temple, landscaped gardens, a multi-media show, a museum with possessions of Swami Narayana, and exhibition halls. There is a 2m gold-leafed statue of xe “Swami Narayana:Gandhinagar” Swami Narayana in the main building and a restaurant. Open 10 am to 8 pm March to Oct, 9 am to 7 pm, Nov to Feb.

There are regular buses to Gandhinagar from the local Lal Darwaja bus stand in Ahmedabad (1 hr) which pick up passengers along Ashram Rd.
